Having spent many years in the TV news business, I know how cussing can simply become part of every day dialogue, especially when you're off the air and under pressure to get a story done.
Suddenly four-letter expletives seem to flow off the tips of many tongues in an effort to express monumental emotions. That is exactly why 14-year-old McKay Hatch started his own website and organization called the No Cussing Club (NCC). It wasn't that Hatch was tired of hearing endless four-letter ranting from news reporters but rather it was that he was tired of listening to his peers curse.
Hatch, a California resident, writes on his website, www.nocussing.com, "A lot of kids at my school, and some of my friends, would cuss and use dirty language all the time. They did it so much; they didn't even realize they were doing it. It bothered me so much that one day I challenged them to stop! They were shocked. They didn't know that it was bothering me. They didn't even realize how much they were doing it until I said something. I was actually surprised at how they reacted; they accepted my No Cussing Challenge. But some of the kids said they didn't know how to stop. That's when I started the No Cussing Club."
Hatch decided that using the old bar of soap punishment was not the best choice. Instead he formed the No Cussing Club at his school to help other students remember to not use foul language. And by the way, not all kids want to cuss or hear others do it-just one month later the club had 50 members. Now it's expanding across the country and the Internet.
"People in my city that I didn't even know were asking me how they could become members. Now there are NCC members all across the United States and other countries," writes Hatch on his web page.
The club's motto is "leave people better than you found them!" Hatch believes the way to do that is by creating a bit of a challenge. "Through the No Cussing Challenge I realized that I could use positive peer pressure on my friends. If my friends could say no to cussing, how much easier will it be for them to say no to drugs, violence, and pornography?"
So, did Hatch create this club and website just for kids? Heck, no! He and all the other club members are hoping that anyone who let's their tongue slip once in a while will take the No Cussing Challenge and join the club and the cause. As Hatch writes, "I hope that this can have a positive effect on your life the way it has for me and my friends!
Thanks Hatch! The world is becoming a better place because of clubs like this one.
