Do you ever have those moments in your life when you just have to test yourself? Test your strength? Test your ability for your body to respond? Test your endurance? Push your limits?
I know...adrenaline junkie, is what you're thinking. Well, sort of. As a TV reporter, I used to love the thrill of breaking news—dropping into a crime scene and trying to get the story on the air first...which 10 News did quite often. That was a rush.
But today, I like a different kind of rush. A physical challenge that requires all of my body to perform (every little muscle contracted to create the perfect form), my mind engaged and concentrating on effectively executing the exercise, and my breath flowing peacefully yet energetically enabling a deeper powerful stretch.
The photo that accompanies this article is of me doing a difficult Pilates exercise called Teaser. And let me tell you, if you haven't tried this one, your abs are going to feel as if you’ve done hundreds of sit ups for days on end when you first attempt the Teaser. I’m a former gym rat, hula dancer, and exercise buff who has tried nearly everything in the workout world. After working out for decades, I discovered a nearly century-old series of exercise known as Pilates. But my relationship with Pilates goes way beyond just getting my daily workout.
Its founder, Joseph Pilates, brings together influences from gymnastics, yoga, martial arts, and traditional exercises to make up 34 core-stabilizing and body-enhancing moves that tone, shape, and build muscle all while helping to re-focus your mind and energize your body and mood through deep breathing.
Pilates has become a friend—a kind, guiding, and, nurturing companion—that pushes me to test myself anywhere, anytime. The photo is of me practicing the Pilates move called the Teaser on a rock near Palm Desert. Wide open space—nature—and just the amazing feeling of testing your body to strengthen your core and intensely work your muscles from head to toe. You see, in Pilates every muscle works together to create the flowing mat routine that is more difficult than any workout I’ve done before.
